Mental Health First Aid

Human Resource Terminologies and Definitions

What Is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training program designed to teach people how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health issues and substance use disorders. Much like traditional first aid, which prepares individuals to provide immediate help for physical injuries, MHFA empowers participants to provide initial support to someone facing a mental health crisis until professional help is available.

This type of training is becoming increasingly vital in workplaces, schools, communities, and even familiesโ€”creating a more informed and compassionate society equipped to respond effectively to mental health concerns.

Why MHFA Matters

Mental health challenges donโ€™t always come with visible symptoms. Someone struggling with depression, anxiety, or trauma might appear to be functioning well externally, while silently suffering internally. Without the right knowledge, friends, coworkers, or managers may miss the warning signsโ€”or worse, respond in ways that are unhelpful or harmful.

By training individuals in Mental Health First Aid, organizations and communities can:

  • Reduce stigma around mental illness
  • Promote early intervention and support
  • Encourage open conversations about emotional well-being
  • Improve the likelihood of recovery through timely professional help

What MHFA Training Covers

MHFA programs are typically 1โ€“2 days long and focus on helping participants:

  • Recognize signs and symptoms of common mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, trauma, and substance use disorders
  • Approach individuals with empathy and confidence
  • Offer initial support and reassurance
  • Encourage the individual to seek professional help or community support services
  • Manage a mental health crisis, such as panic attacks, suicidal thoughts, or severe distress, safely and effectively

One of the most well-known components of MHFA is the ALGEE action plan, which stands for:

  • Approach, assess and assist with any crisis
  • Listen non-judgmentally
  • Give support and information
  • Encourage appropriate professional help
  • Encourage other supports (friends, family, self-help strategies)

The Workplace Advantage

In workplace settings, MHFA is particularly valuable. Employees spend a significant portion of their lives at work, and stressors like deadlines, performance pressure, or interpersonal conflict can take a toll on mental well-being. Employers who invest in MHFA training are better positioned to:

  • Support employee mental health proactively
  • Build a more inclusive and empathetic work culture
  • Reduce absenteeism and presenteeism related to mental health issues
  • Enhance team communication and trust

According to the World Health Organisation (2024), for every $1 invested in mental health interventions, there is a return of $4 in improved health and productivity. MHFA plays a key role in this return by creating first responders who can offer timely support.

While mental health professionals play a critical role in long-term care and diagnosis, MHFA fills an essential gap by enabling everyday people to take action in the moments that matter most. Whether it’s a co-worker who seems withdrawn, a friend expressing hopelessness, or a student showing signs of stress overload, knowing what to say and how to help can make a lasting difference.

Mental Health First Aid is not about diagnosing or treating mental illness. Itโ€™s about recognising when someone is struggling, offering calm and compassionate support, and guiding them toward professional help. Just like CPR saves lives in physical emergencies, MHFA can be a lifesaver in emotional ones.

In a world where mental health challenges are on the rise, MHFA offers hope, preparedness, and human connection. And perhaps most importantlyโ€”it reminds us that anyone can be a lifeline.
