The Ubuntu Challenge: Building a Legacy of Impact and Collaboration

At SeamlessHR, we believe in dreaming big—not just for our business but also for the communities that embrace and support us. As part of our journey to becoming a healthy unicorn, we’re committed to making a meaningful difference beyond the workplace. This commitment gave rise to the Ubuntu Challenge in February 2024, an inspiring initiative under our SeamlessForGood program.

The Ubuntu Challenge embodies the spirit of Ubuntu: “I am because we are”. It encouraged every Seamstar (our cherished team members) to embrace the essence of community, spreading love, care, and compassion wherever they went. The initiative wasn’t just about giving back; it was also designed to strengthen collaboration among teams, blending altruism with camaraderie.

The Challenge: Impact in Action

Over the course of the challenge, more than 200 Seamstars across three countries were divided into teams, each tasked with choosing a charitable cause close to their hearts. The results were nothing short of extraordinary.

One group, Team Zulu, turned its attention to an often-overlooked workforce—sanitation workers. They assembled care packages for more than 30 LAWMA employees in the bustling Metalbox Ogba area. The recipients, who gathered at SeamlessHR’s headquarters, expressed humbling and heartfelt gratitude.

Elsewhere, Team Tiv embarked on a mission of hope. Their food drive, aptly titled “Hope Redefined,” brought sustenance and solace to 50 economically disadvantaged individuals across Ikeja. They personally delivered each package, spreading a message of hope to people in different locations.

Team Massai organised a career day for 500 JSS3 and SS3 students at Oshodi-Bolade Grammar School. The engaging session saw students learning about career paths, the nuances of soft skills. They also donated books to the schools library on behalf of SeamlessHR.

Team Ashanti partnered with the Lagos State Food Bank to address food insecurity, packing food boxes for displaced women and purchasing meals for 250 children in struggling communities. While Team Karo travelled to the Living Faith Orphanage in Lekki, carrying with them provisions that ranged from diesel to rice. These essential items were a lifeline for an orphanage often stretched thin, and the visit brought a rare but much-needed sense of care and connection to its young residents.

Farther afield, Team Efik, based out of Kenya, chose a more delicate cause. They visited a shelter for survivors of gender-based violence, some as young as seven years old. The day was spent not only in the practical tasks of meal preparation and distribution of essentials—wheat flour, maize meal, sanitary pads—but in creating an atmosphere of solidarity and support.

A Collective Achievement

Together, Seamstars raised an impressive 1.2 million Naira for their chosen causes. Inspired by their generosity, our management team matched the contributions of the winners of the challenge, Team Maasai to further amplify the impact of the project.

The Ubuntu Challenge not only made a difference in the lives of the people and communities we touched but also strengthened our internal bonds. Seamstars worked across departments, fostering deeper collaboration and a shared sense of purpose.
